(71,265 posts)I have some friends who said that turnout was better in Manhattan and Northern Brooklyn.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)But I know a lot skip the primaries.

(205,452 posts)I always vote, too, always have, but so many just don't bother, even in a presidential election. I remember when I was first working, I stopped to vote on my way to work and I was excited about it. So when I walked into work, I said to whoever was listening, "Did everybody vote yet?" And I was met with blank stares.

(205,452 posts)That few voted?! When I hear things like this, I think of those who died while working to get the right to vote...
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)she won. But yes it is heartbreaking when no one votes.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)Of all the ugliness, the TV ads and the mailings. One 90-something-year-old lady took me to her trash can to show me the amount of paper she'd thrown away. But she'd already voted absentee. There is no excuse for not voting in a case like this, since no one can say they weren't aware of it...
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)I never miss elections.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)And it's certainly got to be a lot more competitive. Up here, a lot of the local offices are decided in the Republican primaries. *sigh*
However, a Democrat came to the door over the weekend, is running for County Supervisor. I'm crossing my fingers, but not holding my breath.
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)The Gop primary had like 55,000 and that was high turnout.
For most races in this city the dem primary is the election.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)Since the majority of the population is there. Up here in the hinterlands, Republicans greatly outnumber Democrats. I can't see how that can be, since the party is no longer that of Lincoln - or Eisenhower. But most people aren't paying attention.
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)My congressman Grimm wants them to fund the government after he encouraged them to shut it down.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)Kirsten Gillibrand ran again that time, too, and she always won in a landslide. But after one term, a Republican won again. Guess I told you that I worked on all of his (two) campaigns. *sigh* But I'm wondering if this insane Republican behavior is going to change some minds. Even those who normally don't pay attention are going to notice if they're affected by this government shutdown. I'm hoping, anyway...
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)At this point it hurts the GOP more.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)Ordinary people. Doesn't anyone remember the shutdown back in 1995-6?! I do and I wasn't paying attention like I am now. Even my grandmother, who had voted Republican all her life, changed and voted for Clinton - twice.

(71,265 posts)I hear cancer patients are not getting their treatments. This is horrible.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)She called me to tell me and I told her that I did, too, but we didn't need to talk about that with the others, LOL. My whole family was Republican. *sigh* I think I've been a good influence on my two cousins I'm close to, think they're paying more attention now. I bring up politics all the time, just can't help it...
And what I heard from Martin Bashir this afternoon was that since NIH is shut down, they've postponed clinical trials of new cancer medications for children. But that is really bad...
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)My fathers siblings are mostly republicans and so are most of their children but the next generation are democrats.
My mother's family for the most part are dems.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)I just can't keep my feelings to myself, mainly since Bush* made such a horrific mess. When I was making GOTV calls for my congressman, I was pleased to find a couple of second cousins on my list of registered Democrats to call. My grandfather was Irish, and a Democrat, but he married my Republican grandmother and he died quite young, so she raised a family of Republicans. Though I have to say that my Dad was open minded. My mother actually liked Barack Obama until she learned he was a Democrat...
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)My mothers family talks about it just fine.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)If I say anything, he likes to remind me that he has a Masters Degree in political science. *sigh* I stopped by to see him on my way home tonight and I asked him what had happened with the president's meeting with congressional leaders, since I hadn't heard any news. But he had been watching "American Pickers..."

(71,265 posts)My parents vote democrat.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)My mother and my brother even had their picture taken with Rick Lazio when he ran against Hillary Clinton.
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)Lazio is not as insane as other GOPers.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)And I can't even remember the guy who ran against her the second time. I don't think much of anybody noticed him...
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)The polling showed it to be close but she won by 12% and was helped By a 17% win by Gore.

(205,452 posts)Over the weekend, I had to help my friend with her dog who got fleas even though she'd been flea treated. The vet said it was because it was getting colder and the fleas were jumping on everything. But now it's in the 70s again - not that I mind.

(205,452 posts)Fortunately, I'm not as bad as I was *knock on wood*, since I had to give up the Advair when I lost my health insurance. The price went up by about $200. :
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)I just take a nebulizer when I need it and an inhaler.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)Though it actually cost $30, while my usual copay for prescriptions was $10. And that may be why I needed to have a nebulizer. Lately, whenever I get a cold I end up needing it. I'm hoping that the ACA helps a lot of people.
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)I think the GOP will realize it will work and hate the idea of Obama getting credit.
Rhiannon12866
(205,452 posts)They can't be that stupid to think they can change the law. A lot of them credit Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy with the idea and they already couldn't stand that. But, as usual, they have no memory of history. Nixon was the one who came up with the idea, but it never went anywhere because of Watergate. Today, even Nixon would be considered "too liberal..."
