Study: Cancer Rising Among Officers Who Responded To WTC Site

NY1News

A new report shows a steady rise in the numbers of police officers who have been diagnosed with cancer in the years following the September 11th attacks.

The New York City Police Department says since the terror attacks, the number of thyroid cancer cases have doubled, while the number of officers diagnosed with non Hodgkins lymphoma has more than tripled.

There have also been more than 50 deaths related to the cleanup efforts.

"Virtually everyone in the department rotated in and out of one of these sites during the six month period at least after 9/11. So it's important they get themselves checked. There's always some people, 10 percent that don't get the word. We're trying to address that here now," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly
