Police talk down suicidal man from Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and rescue him from girder 300 feet

Police talk down suicidal man from Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and rescue him from girder 300 feet above the water

By Thomas Tracy / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

A crew of hero cops saved a distressed man threatening to leap off the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Tuesday by getting him to commit to another 24 hours of living.

Police said the 62-year-old Brooklyn resident was on the bridge’s upper level heading towards Staten Island at about 11:15 a.m. when he stopped mid-span, got out of his car and climbed over the railing next to a sign that read “Life is Worth Living.”

Despite the reminder, the would-be jumper, clad in a sweatshirt and jeans, walked out onto a girder that sticks out 300 feet above the water.

When cops arrived, the distraught man was facing the bridge and teetering on the girder’s edge, about to take a fatal backwards leap.
