Remember (if not, then imagine), New York State represented simultaneously by Bella Abzug, Elizabeth Holzman, and Ed Koch.

when the nation burned in 1968, Mayor Lindsay rolled up his sleeves and because he was the greatest liberal to ever be mayor, NYC was the only one that didn't burn.
Of course, people sold him down the river for being a great union man and sympathizer,
as such, everyone after him could not govern the same way and was restricted, thanks to the backlash.
Too bad JVL didn't stay in the Presidential race in 1972. He got more votes in the few primaries he was in, than George McGovern(the eventual nominee) did
Back then the two most important parties in NYC were the liberal and conservative ones.
The Democratic and republican were almost afterthoughts, and Koch one year he won, was the nominee on both of them (

Ed had some great points, and some really, really bad ones.
He was New York during his time, for better or worse, best cheerleader NYC ever had love him or hate him.
