Democrats drive new voter growth in Capital Region
ALBANY — The enrollment of new Democratic voters in the Capital Region has outpaced new Republicans since the election of President Donald J. Trump two years ago.
Newly registered Democrats account for 40.6 percent of the new voters in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties, which is 3 percentage points higher than their share of the voter enrollment in November 2016. The percentage of new Republicans, however, is lagging behind their Capital Region portion of the vote by more than 9 points.
John McLaughlin, a pollster for Trump's 2016 campaign, blamed the national Republican Party for failing to drive voter registration, and credited the Democrats with recognizing the political opportunity posed by next month's midterm elections.
"They've learned more. They're more aggressive," he said of the national Democratic Party in the wake of Trump's victory.
