Corruption in state government is a serious problem, say nine-out-of-ten state voters
By JAMES GORMLEY, Gazette staff writer
Ninety-two percent of New York voters say corruption in state government is a serious problem, but at the same time, 53 percent says passing an on-time budget is more important than passing the governor's proposed ethics reform legislation, according to a Siena College poll released Tuesday.
The poll questions are based on statements Gov. Andrew Cuomo made Feb. 2 at NYU Law School when he said he will not sign a budget if it does not include an ethics plan based on his recommendations.
Cuomo's recommendations include complete disclosure of all outside income for legislators; a constitutional amendment that would eliminate pensions for lawmakers convicted of corruption; require legislators' per diems be used only for actual expenses; require campaign funds be used only for campaigning and not for personal use; and change campaign finance laws.
