During the panel discussion on Real Time last night, Bill Maher spoke with public intellectual Fran Lebowitz, director Rob Reiner, and Bill Nye “The Science Guy” about the rationale behind former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani’s comments about Obama not loving America.

Lebowitz said that when Giuliani ran for mayor of New York City in 1993, his ads said “vote for me and it’ll be 1952 again. He is just soaked in nostalgia. That’s what he meant when he said Obama doesn’t love the country the way we love the county.”

“What does it mean,” Maher asked, “that Republicans want to go back to an era, the Fifties, where America was run by socialism?”

“No,” Lebowitz interjected, “when Giuliani was the mayor, every five minutes an unarmed black guy was getting shot in the back. It was always a different excuse from the cops — ‘he had something in his hand, I thought it was a gun,’ and it was a candy bar. It was a key chain.”

1. Every 5 minutes an unarmed black guy getting shot in the back: that's 105,120 / year

12 per hour * 8760 hours / year = 105,120 / year

Add to that the number of armed black guys getting shot in the back. Plus the number shot elsewhere besides the back. And all this in just one city, albeit the largest city in the U.S.

2. This is called hyperbole

It was a figure of speech, a rhetorical flourish. You're taking it literally.

4. We all know that it's hyperbole, but it's

presented as if a valid statistic. When someone makes such a vast, and frankly ignorant, overstatement, I tend to discount everything else that person says.

In another thread about that statement I likewise did the math. And then wonder how it was that any black men still lived in NYC.
