An 18-month effort to swab handrails across the New York subway network has found anthrax DNA and germs that can cause bubonic plague and meningitis.
Weill Cornell researcher Christopher Mason scoured the entire network as part of the first genetic profile of a major metropolitan transport system.
He found that the type of germs discovered were unique to particular areas - and believes the research could help to track future disease outbreaks.
The plague germs were found uptown, for example, while meningitis was prevalent in midtown.

(37,337 posts)It would be unfortunate if the Homeless, caused by the 1 percent, are the source of an epidemic.
On the other hand, the GOP just loves epidemics.

(14,691 posts)found on the Tasmanian Devil. I thought that guy next to me on the R looked funny.
In other words, I'm not impressed. Millions of people ride the subway every year. Who's surprised there are germs?

I don't want all those germs everywhere I sit.

(14,691 posts)NYC? I don't like germs any more than anyone else does but - what else are immune systems for?
I admit, I'm more germ conscious lately because the current flu vaccine (yes I got it) is good for almost nothing this year - I'm making good use of the Purell dispensers wherever I see them - but germs are EVERYWHERE. I'm more freaked out about a different study that found e-coli on ATM keypads. (! !)

Wonderful. Soon we'll all be wearing latex gloves every time we leave home.
My problem is shopping carts.
How many germs do these things carry around?
