After Garner, S.I. lawmakers propose transparency bill

Josefa Velasquez

ALBANY—In the wake of the Eric Garner decision, two state lawmakers who represent Staten Island are pushing for legislation to increase transparency of grand jury proceedings.

On Friday, State Senator Diane Savino and Assemblyman Matt Titone, both Democrats, told Capital they plan to introduce legislation to require the disclosure of more information about what occurs during a grand jury hearing.

“It would eliminate the absolute secrecy of grand jury proceedings after [jurors] have completed their mission,” Savino said. “So we retain the secrecy during the grand jury proceedings. But once it's done, the transcripts should be available for public view.”
