LICH nurses headed back to court
Dan Goldberg
Nurses and health care workers at Long Island College Hospital are planning to head back to court on Wednesday, asking a judge to put a hold on the sale of the Cobble Hill facility and accusing SUNY of making a mockery of the court-approved settlement.
The New York State Nurses Association and 1199 SEIU Healthcare Workers East filed papers in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn, claiming Fortis Property Group and its partners N.Y.U. Langone Medical Center and Lutheran Medical Center are not living up to terms of the deal they made with SUNY when they agreed earlier this year to purchase the hospital for $240 million.
Specifically, the unions, which are seeking a temporary restraining order, accuse the hospitals of not making an effort to hire current and former LICH employees for the new freestanding emergency department, which N.Y.U. is scheduled to begin running next week, or clinics that will be run by Lutheran.
The unions cannot technically go after Fortis or N.Y.U. because of how the case has so far proceeded through the courts. Instead, they must ask a judge to stop SUNY from completing the sale because SUNY is allegedly not enforcing the terms of the deal.
