Moskowitz on her ‘joyful’ formula for test-score dominance-charter school figure

The Success Academy charter school network outperformed much of the rest of the city and state on English and math exams this year, bolstering Success C.E.O. Eva Moskowitz's claim that her controversial network should be allowed to nearly double in size over the next two years.
Ninety-four percent of Success students in the 22-school network who took the exam scored proficiently on math, and 64 percent were proficient in English, according to a spokeswoman for Success. (Citywide averages in math and English were far lower: only 35 percent of students in New York City scored proficiently on math tests, and 29 percent scored proficiently on English exams.)
Four Success schools ranked among the top 10 scorers in math in the state for the 2014 exams; while Success' high-poverty schools also performed especially well in both math and English.
Moskowitz, who engaged in a public battle with Mayor Bill de Blasio earlier this year over school space, has been heralded in the tabloids for her schools' performance this week. The New York Post called the results "astounding," the Daily News wrote, "Eva is doing exactly what she needs to do: creating great schools."
