Schumer Mocks Other Cities as Brooklyn Vies for Convention

Ross Barkan

Senator Charles Schumer is not a fan of Los Angeles’ traffic, Chicago’s buses or Charlotte’s roadways.

That much was made clear this morning as New York’s senior senator pitched the Barclays Center in Brooklyn as the best site for the 2016 Democratic National Convention. As Mr. Schumer, along with many of the city’s elected officials, boosted the borough of Kings, the senator took time to compare Brooklyn to cities that hosted past Democratic conventions, casting the old sites in highly unfavorable light.

“There is no, no, no better place than Brooklyn, New York for the convention,” Mr. Schumer, a Brooklyn native, declared. “To say we don’t have hotel space is a canard. We have better hotel space than any other city and it’s closer to the convention center than it has been in most of the other cities, believe me, I was there, I sat in the traffic in L.A., sat on the buses in Chicago, tried to find my way around Charlotte and all those highways.”

So, I have no idea what Schumer was doing on Chicago buses.

And Brooklyn is not a city, but a borough (whatever that is) of New York City.

3. I basically means it is a county of NYC. Brookkyn was a city until the 1890's I believe.

7. Thanks. I'm not even sure what a county is, though.

Have no idea why we need them.

But, no matter. Point is, Brooklyn is not a city.

If it makes you feel any better, I have a friend who moved from Boston to Brooklyn and worked in Manhattan, but moved to L.A. after 911. He would say that L.A. traffic is in a class by itself.

I miss that city. Seattle's great, but, damn, just doesn't compare.

10. Inez Barron won’t support Brooklyn D.N.C. bid

After 25 members of the City Council on Monday endorsed Brooklyn's bid to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention in an attempted show of unity, at least one Brooklyn council member is opposing the plan.

Councilwoman Inez Barron, who represents East New York, told Capital she will not support Mayor Bill de Blasio's push for Brooklyn to host the convention at the Barclays Center because there's no evidence it will help the low-income residents in her district.

"We'll have developers, money people and big corporations that will benefit [from the convention] but the small person that is just trying to get ahead won't," Barron said

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- New York City is putting its best foot forward in its bid to land the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

But "the city that never sleeps" could be facing serious competition from the City of Brotherly Love.

New York officials, including Mayor Bill de Blasio and U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, are meeting with members of the Democratic National Committee on Monday and Tuesday to push the bid, which would see the convention hosted at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.
