$250 million Staten Island-Brooklyn water tunnel more than half-done

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Installation of a new, 100-foot-deep water tunnel between Staten Island and Brooklyn is back on track, with the project more than 50 percent complete after delays in the boring-operation timetable because of damage suffered during Hurricane Sandy.
The $250 million project involves excavating a new, deeper tunnel -- called a siphon -- 100 feet under New York Harbor to convey drinking water from Brooklyn to Staten Island. Once the new tunnel is ready, the two existing, shallower, nearly 100-year-old water connections -- running from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, to Stapleton and Tompkinsville -- will be removed.
The "siphon project," managed by the city Economic Development Corp., is jointly funded by the city Department of Environmental Protection and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
