editorial: Good signs for our cities

TU Editoral Board

THE ISSUE:

More people are choosing to live in Capital Region cities.

THE STAKES:

Communities need to support this positive trend and support the new residents.

The ceremonial demolition of an abandoned building near downtown Schenectady and the recent surge in real estate sales in Albany and Troy are hopeful signs that we may finally be emerging from the devastating mortgage banking crisis.

CHRIS CHURCHILL

A columnist who writes about a city's comprehensive plan is taking a risk. Few topics cause more eyes to glaze over.

Foolishly, I'm plunging ahead. Bear with me.

See, the city of Troy is about to conduct its first master plan in more than five decades. The last one, released in 1962, unleashed terrible consequences.

That plan was written during a bad time for cities. People were leaving for the clean, green suburbs. The old downtowns were dying. Factories were moving south or closing altogether.
