Cuomo to sign bill banning sex offenders as volunteer firefighters

Gov. Andrew Cuomo today will sign legislation that will require applicants for volunteer firefighter positions to submit a background check for any prior sex offense convictions.

“Volunteer firefighters bravely answer the call to help their neighbors and their communities in their time of need,” Cuomo said in a statement obtained by Gannett’s Albany Bureau. “Allowing volunteer fire organizations to screen prospective members and prevent sex offenders from joining their ranks is a commonsense reform that will help protect New Yorkers when they are at their most vulnerable.”
