Christine Quinn Pushes For Faster Plan To Replace MetroCards With No-Swipe Payments

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is pushing the MTA to speed up a delayed plan to let straphangers get on to subways without swiping MetroCards.

MTA officials once hoped to start scrapping MetroCards in favor of no-swipe smartcards starting in 2012, but that date came and went with no change to the 20-year-old MetroCard system.

“The reality is a promise was made to straphangers and that promise was not lived up to,” the mayoral hopeful said. “We in New York City have fallen behind other municipalities in providing the quickest, easiest, most cost effective transit in the country, in part because we’re still so dedicated to using the MetroCard.”

No swipe access was a pet project of ex-MTA head Jay Walder - but he left the agency in 2009 and was replaced by Joe Lhota, who has also since left to run for mayor.
