Schumer: Let Pet Owners Buy Prescriptions For Their Animals At Regular Pharmacies

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says pet owners could save millions of dollars on prescriptions for their animals if they could buy the drugs at ordinary pharmacies.

The New York Democrat says that he's working with U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut on legislation that would require veterinarians to write prescriptions to allow owners to buy the medication at a pharmacy or online.

pills for my dog at Shoprite pharmacy, Maybe it is a NY thing.
I have to admit, I started letting the vet sell me pills since they have dropped their priced and become competitive. I still remember years ago when they were charging me 150 a month for dog pills, but I had them prescribe double dosage and filled the prescription on line, and by cutting the pills in half, I got the price down to 30 a month.

so money was tight and I had to realize that I could not keep paying for 150 a month for the dog and for her various surgeries and other medications, this dog was messed up when she was fixed by a vet and had chronic bladder infections as well, the 150 was for the pain medication alone for the rest of her life and she was a young dog. The pain meds did work very well and she was quite happy until the week she died almost 8 years later. But like I said, they have really reduced their prices in the last year because everyone was asking for prescriptions. I know I always did. Now it is maybe a couple of bucks higher for the convenience of leaving the vet with the meds.

prescribed Valium to deal with the after effects of his previous owner's abuse, and I always got the scrip filled at Walgreens. I had to make sure they didn't try to charge my insurance. I'm sure a claim for Pancake Alexander-Vander Woude would've raised a red flag or two, LOL.

over the years. Our vet(s) have always either given us discounts, bartered services (my husband was a painter before he had to go on SSD), got samples, or scrips to fill at pharmacies which is much cheaper. I'm down to 3 kittehs now, but my vet still gives me deals.

for their cats and dogs. I buy meds for fish over the counter that normally would require a script.
