Two state lawmakers call on all NYC DAs not to prosecute low level pot possession cases

KEN LOVETT

Two state legislators have written four of the city’s district attorneys asking they follow Brooklyn DA Ken Thompson’s lead by declining to prosecute cases against those charged with possessing small amounts of pot.

But the prosecutors aren’t high on the idea.

“It’s not often that I am contacted by members of the state Legislature and asked not to enforce the law,” Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan wrote in a response letter.

Sen. Daniel Squadron and Assemblyman Karim Camara, Brooklyn Democrats who recently introduced legislation that would decriminalize the possession of small amounts of pot, sent letters last week to the district attorneys in Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island urging them to copy Thompson.
