TOMPKINSVILLE, N.Y. (WABC) -- The wife of a New York City man who died in police custody after an officer used an apparent chokehold burst into tears at a rally held in his honor Saturday.
Esaw Garner was overcome by emotion Saturday at a rally held at the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network headquarters in Harlem. Sharpton said Eric Garner's death will test the New York Police Department's relationship with the black community.
Authorities said 43-year-old Eric Garner had a heart attack Thursday as officers attempted to arrest him for illegally selling cigarettes. Garner can be heard on the video saying he wasn't doing anything wrong. Video appears to show one officer putting Garner in a chokehold, and then several other officers getting involved. Chokeholds are prohibited for New York Police Officers.
