The New York Daily News delivered five sacks of petitionswhich newspaper officials said added up to about 40,000 signaturesto City Hall on Wednesday afternoon in a protest against Mayor Bill de Blasio's push to ban horse carriages in Central Park.
George Miranda, president of Teamsters Joint Council 16, which includes Local 553, the carriage drivers' union, said the Daily News "is the representative of the people of New York City."
"As you know, the people of New York have supported us over 66 percent in their latest poll," Miranda said. "There are over 300 families that live on this industry, and we're not going to let them hang out there for the sake of some individuals who have no idea whatsoever what it is to put food on the table and support their families."
