Cuomo: College rape cases should be handled by police

Jessica Bakeman

ALBANY—Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday that crimes such as rape committed on college campuses shouldn't be dealt with differently than other crimes.

“I understand that individual colleges want to come up with different policies to deal with what happens on their campuses," Cuomo told reporters after an event in Rochester. "I also understand as a former attorney general and a former assistant district attorney that we're talking about potential criminal activity, and if it is criminal activity, we have to remember it doesn't matter if it happens on a private facility.”

Cuomo's comments were in response to a question about a New York Times report on the handling of an alleged rape at Hobart and William Smith colleges in Geneva.
