Obama: Ray Kelly 'well-qualified' for DHS post

AP

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly would be "well-qualified" to run the Department of Homeland Security.

Kelly has been floated as a possible replacement for outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. She's leaving to take over the University of California system.

Obama didn't confirm whether he is actively considering nominating Kelly, saying the commissioner "might be very happy where he is." But Obama says if Kelly isn't, he'd want to know about it because Kelly would be well-qualified for the Homeland Security post.

Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York has said he wants Obama to nominate Kelly.

I have come to the conclusion that President Obama is fine with 'Stop and Frisk' and all the other outrageous shit that is happening in this country.

His stance on cannabis legalization proves he is fine with filling the prisons with black people.

It will not affect him, or his family.

They are members of the privileged 1%.

I've had the pleasure... along with the rest of the taxpayers of NYC... of shelling out settlements to those citizens illegally detained and/or spied upon ever since.

Anytime Obama... or Kelly himself for that matter... wants to kick in on the tab just send the $$$ to me .... care of DU.

Kelly should be DHS exactly as much as Bernie Kerik should be head of DHS and exactly as much as Arne Duncan should be Sec of Ed.

Seriously... interesting comment. Gives you a snapshot of how well our president's head is working theses days. It isn't encouraging.

>>>The city and the Police Department have come under intense scrutiny over the surveillance tactics, in which for more than a year before the convention undercover officers traveled to cities across the country, and to Canada and Europe, to conduct covert observations of people who planned to attend. But beyond potential troublemakers, those placed under surveillance included street theater companies, church groups, antiwar activists, environmentalists, and people opposed to the death penalty, globalization and other government policies.

And as the convention unfolded, more than 1,800 people were arrested, mostly for minor violations, and many were herded into pens at a Hudson River pier and fingerprinted instead of being released on summonses or desk appearance tickets, which are more customary for charges that amount to little more than a traffic ticket.

As scores of federal lawsuits challenging the mass arrests on Aug. 31, 2004, were filed in Federal District Court in Manhattan, with plaintiffs claiming wrongful detentions of up to two days and other violations by the police to keep protesters off the streets, the outlines of the extensive covert surveillance operation began to emerge from court records.

In March, The New York Times disclosed details of the sweeping operation, including a sample of raw intelligence documents and summaries of observations from field agents and the police cyberintelligence unit. Some plaintiffs and their lawyers, seeking to bolster their cases, asked the court to disclose the documents. In May, Judge Francis allowed the disclosure of 600 pages of documents relating to security preparations before the convention.>> http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/07/nyregion/07police.html?pagewanted=1&_r=0&ref=nationalspecial3

Kelly is going to be 72 yrs old, he turned down a chance to run for mayor. Sounds more like Schumer wants to smooze then be serious. It funny how people hate Kelly even the cops...mostly because he is as they say a hard ass.
