Civil rights groups weigh in on Westchester fair housing settlement

Elizabeth Ganga

Representatives from several civil rights organizations have thrown their weight behind the Anti-Discrimination Center’s criticism of Westchester County’s implementation of its 2009 fair housing settlement with the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the oversight of the settlement by HUD and the court-appointed monitor.

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the Poverty & Race Research Action Council and the NAACP astorinosettlementLegal Defense and Education Fund sent a letter to Jim Johnson, the monitor overseeing the settlement, asking him to expand his analysis of zoning in Westchester, arguing that his methodology is inconsistent with fair housing law.

They also said they are disappointed with HUD’s “uncritical concurrence” in the methodology.
