Working around donation limits

When George Soros wanted to support Andrew Cuomo, he didn't send the check directly.

After all, New York's campaign finance laws — derided by good-government groups and the Democratic governor himself — limit contributions to any statewide candidate to $60,000 in a four-year cycle.

So instead, the liberal billionaire sent $750,000 to the Democratic State Committee, which has been bulked up at Cuomo's direction, so it could help fund a $5.3 million pro-Cuomo ad campaign, campaign finance disclosures show.

The committee raised and spent the money for the ads through its soft money, or "housekeeping" account. Soros' donation comes on top of the $6.2 million Cuomo reaped during the last six months for his own re-election account, records show.
