Agreement on medical marijuana legislation still eludes Gov. Cuomo and lawmakers

GLENN BLAIN

Despite late night changes made to the proposed medical marijuana legislation, Gov. Cuomo isn’t ready to sign it.

Speaking on public radio’s The Capitol Pressroom, Cuomo said he would not sign the bill if the Senate and the Assembly adopt it as it is currently written. The governor made it clear there’s still no “conceptual agreement” on the issue of legalizing pot for medical purposes.

“We’ve made progress in the discussions but we are not there yet,” Cuomo told host Susan Arbetter.

Cuomo’s comments came after the Assembly and Senate sponsors amended the bill late Monday night in a bid to win over Cuomo. Among other things, the sponsors pared down the list of diseases that medical marijuana could be used to treat and they eliminates a planned advisory committee that would have had great sway in deciding how and when the marijuana program could be expanded. Instead, that power will largely rest with the health commissioner.
