Schumer: It's time to expand early-warning system for Upstate New York floods
By Mark Weiner
Washington - U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said today the federal government needs to expand an early-warning system for floods by increasing the number of stream and river gauges that measure water levels.
Schumer, reacting to the recent floods in Central New York and the Mohawk Valley, said he supports an Obama Administration proposal to add 300 new gauges nationwide.
Although the locations for those new gauges have not been determined, Schumer said he expects "scores" would be added to New York state.
"Unfortunately, we've seen a new reality now when it comes to storms and flooding in Upstate New York," Schumer said in a conference call with reporters in which he noted an increased frequency of flooding in the past few years.
