Hotel Union Endorses Quinn in Mayor’s Race

By DAVID W. CHEN

The New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council, one of the city’s most politically potent unions, plans to spend as much as $2 million on television, radio and mail to back its preferred candidate in the mayoral race: Christine C. Quinn.

The union’s endorsement, approved unanimously by delegates on Thursday, comes at a critical time for Ms. Quinn, the speaker of the City Council. She had been the front-runner in the crowded Democratic field, but the race is now competitive and unsettled.

The hotel workers are the first major union to say that they plan to establish a “super PAC” to aid a mayoral candidate. Their move could put pressure on other unions — like the United Federation of Teachers, which recently endorsed William C. Thompson Jr. — to take a similar step to remain competitive.

The hotel workers are the last of the city’s four most politically powerful unions to endorse a mayoral candidate. Ms. Quinn now has the backing of two of the four, including not only the hotel workers, but also Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union.
