NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission adds 30-cent surcharge to fund more wheelchair-accessible cabs

In a historic meeting packed with advocates for the disabled, the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission Wednesday voted to add a 30-cent surcharge to all cab rides to help boost the number of wheelchair accessible vehicles.

The money collected from the surcharge - which riders will start paying in 2015 - will go towards converting over half of the city's current fleet of taxicabs into accessible vehicles.

The board voted unanimously to support the rules, prompting a round of applause from the standing room only crowd.
