Statewide ban on fracking waste fails in committee

Kyle Adams Columbia-Greene Media
ALBANY — A proposed statewide ban on the disposal of fracking waste materials from other states in New York was killed in the State Senate’s Committee on Environmental Conservation yesterday.

The measure, introduced by Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk, D-Duanesburg, would have banned the transportation of waste products from shale gas hydrofacturing in other states — the controversial process is currently banned under a moratorium in New York while a health and environmental study is conducted — which can contain high levels of harmful chemicals.

Similar measures have been brought before town and village boards throughout Greene County, as well as the Greene County Legislature.

The vote was split 7-6, with the five Democratic senators and one Independent Democratic Conference member on the committee in support of the measure, according to a press release from Tkaczyk’s office.
