A soccer stadium, sort of

Howard Megdal

The big soccer announcement at Yankee Stadium last week—that New York's second franchise would be playing there starting in 2015—started off with some fanfare.

Beloved Yankee reliever Mariano Rivera was brought up to the podium and declared the first season-ticket holder for New York City F.C., the club that was announced almost a year ago as the league’s 20th, with expansion rights purchased by Premier League club Manchester City and the Yankees for $100 million.

But by the time the conference had wrapped up, it was clear just how far afield Major League Soccer's second foray into the New York market had strayed from its goals just a short time ago—how disappointed the club, and M.L.S. commissioner Don Garber, must be to be playing in the Yankees’ yard.
