Booker discusses religious discrimination in New Brunswick
NEW BRUNSWICK - U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., was in the city Friday night to discuss religious discrimination and the piece of legislation he recently introduced in Congress that has a goal of preventing a religious-based immigration registry.
The town hall event was at the New Brunswick Islamic Center and garnered around 300 attendees, according to a spokesman for Booker.
"I know the American Muslim community, and particularly here in New Jersey, has played a vibrant and critical role in making our country what it is today," Booker said at the event. "Here in New Jersey, the American Muslim community is a vital and engaged constituency — your contributions in business, in education, in civic service, to our rich and diverse culture, are so important to our state, and to our country."
He said that because of the Muslim community's valuable contributions to the state and to the country, "it is unconscionable to me that we would be hearing the kind of rhetoric that is in our public discourse."
