Physicians committee says D-H inappropriately uses live animals to train medical residents
LEBANON — A physician group said it’s launched a complaint accusing the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center of inappropriately using live animals to train emergency medicine residents.
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says the inappropriate practice involves cutting into live sheep for medical residents to practice their skills.
The complaint accuses the hospitals of failing to honor the federal Animal Welfare Act that requires medical school instructors to consider “alternatives” to practices that cause more than “momentary or slight pain” to live animals for research purposes.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Eastern Region Animal Care office was given the complaint, the physician group said in a news release that announced its action.
