KCPD officer involved in multiple excessive-force lawsuits no longer with the force
In the span of just a few hours on the morning of May 2, 2014, two officers with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department cost taxpayers $375,000. As we reported last month, officers Shannon Hansen and Jacob Harris used excessive force during back-to-back stops, resulting in two separate settlements.
Hansen resigned from the force in July 2015 and, in May of this year, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of harassment, in connection with one of the cases. He was sentenced to two years’ probation and 30 days of shock time in jail.
As we noted in our story, though, Harris remained employed by the KCPD, despite the fact that he had also been involved in a separate excessive-force incident in 2009 that resulted in a $300,000 settlement.
As of last week, though, Harris is no longer on the force. Under state law, the details of Harris' departure are not public record, but KCPD general counsel Virginia Murray confirmed yesterday that "{Harris'} departure was effective January 19, 2017."
