Tax refund for 2017!

Just happened to log into our checking account and today a nice sum was deposited by the MN Dept of Revenue. So I called them. A letter is in the mail - was printed two days ago - but there were some changes for the 2017 return and refund, plus interest, were deposited. My understanding is that it is everyone, not just us.. So go check your accounts, if the Dept. has your bank info.

OK. Will take it.

MN return is so convoluted.

But I did get the letter and went in search of the correction. Since I used TurboTax I knew it was not my mistake but was curious.

We itemized our deductions and one could only deduct medical expenses that exceeded 7.5% of AGI. But MN set the bar higher to 10%. So one had to use a few more forms, of course, to add this 2.5%. (The new Federal "tax reform" now also uses the 10% bar).

The corrected form now removed that addition to income, reduced the taxable income and the tax and, in our case, increased the refund.

I do hope that the 2019 forms are not as bad as the 2018 but am doubtful. Yes, I use TurboTax but usually have my spreadsheet filled.

Know just what you are talking about. We ended up using a CPA the last twenty years or so. Outside sales expenses caused a Audit in the mid seventies, after that, enough, take to Mikey,he will figure this think out.

Had a similiar situation in the State of Utah when they gave you a option to either pay 7% of your AGI or 5%. Choose the 7 just in case, later that year the State Legislature changed the List of qualified deductions and made it retroactive back to the filing year. So we received a refund for the 2% difference, something in the 200 dollars neighborhood. Course that all changed two years later when their Legislature gave the Business and Industry a massive break and added SS and your AMD's and Pensions to the Gross Income . And to top that off,it was retroactive to the previous year. That was one ugly check to cut.
