the Republicans wouldn't be taking this exact same course of action.

The law is the law. And they're the "law and order" party, aren't they? As noted, it doesn't stop Drumpf fans from writing in their candidate.

in the Senate race in NJ several years ago. Torricelli had to drop out after the deadline, and was replaced by Lautenberg, because not doing so would have denied the people of NJ a choice.

Have to get 5 letters in a row right and all that. Chances of that occurring is 1 in 5^26 power = 1 in 1.49 * 10^18 = 1 in 1.49 quadrillion quintillion. And that's assuming they got the "5 letters" part right.
