DFLer wins special election to northern Minnesota House seat

International Falls Democrat Rob Ecklund easily won a special election Tuesday to replace the late DFL Rep. David Dill in the Minnesota House.

Ecklund, a Koochiching County commissioner and paper mill worker, bested Republican Roger Skraba and independent Kelsey Johnson in the District 3A race in northeastern Minnesota.

Ecklund garnered 64 percent of the vote. Skraba, with 19 percent, and Johnson, 16 percent, were far behind.

Johnson won just one of the district's 83 precincts and Skraba won just two. Ecklund dominated all the rest.

This was an election that was run in the primary. Ecklund handily defeated Bill Hansen of Sawbill Outfitters, who has run several times (including against Dill) on a strongly environmental platform. In any case, this is good news for 3A; Ecklund is definitely more liberal than Dill, I'd say, especially on social issues.
