This is news? Was my first reaction

about Viking stadium overrun by $50 million (or even $35 million..). Anyone who did not expect something like that has never followed public works, anywhere in the country.

The panel in charge of overseeing construction of the $1.1 billion U.S. Bank Stadium has been in tense closed-door negotiations about what could be a $50 million dispute over change orders and cost adjustments, the outgoing treasurer of the board said Wednesday.

“I don’t think we should be hesitant to say, ‘We have a problem’ and air it out,” said Duane Benson, a Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority (MSFA) board member, who is leaving Aug. 1.

His “worst-case” estimate puts the problem between $35 million and $50 million, but he acknowledged it could be less or more. Eventually, someone is going to have to pay more, someone will get less or the stadium amenities could be scaled down. “Everybody stands to come out less well than they thought,” he said.

But leave it to Sack to express this perfectly

Cancer and emphysema for the Vikings. I hope they have TV's in the hospital wards so they can at least watch the games.

The bigger news is that the smoking tax and the iPad BINGO tax that was supposed to generate enough tax revenue to pay for this stadium will never come close to paying the bill.

We want people to stop smoking, right? So we think that taxing them will be in incentive. But if they do stop, then we don't have the funds for whatever project we planned..

Last time I heard, the good folks in Pennsylvania were still paying a tax on their liquor to help rebuild the town of Johnstown destroyed in the epic dam burst in 1889. Never let a good tax die.

stadium will come from the general fund even though promises were made that it would not. I blame Governor Dayton for this boodoggle.
