Totally trivial vanity post. My snow lament.

It started snowing up here where I live, in northern Pine County, around 6:00 this morning. It has snowed all day.

When I drove home from work, leaving my workplace a little after 4 pm, the road had not been plowed, of course. It was a white-knuckle drive in near white-out conditions for 20 miles, which took well over an hour.

When I finally got home, there was a foot and a half of snow in my driveway - but I had no choice but to try to drive in, since I couldn't leave the car out on the road - which would, presumably, get plowed eventually. So, of course my car got stuck. Oh well.

After slogging through the snow (which was higher than my boot tops) to my front door, I shoveled off my steps. I just checked outside and there's already another foot of snow (higher than my boot tops) on the steps, and my car has disappeared under the snow and now looks like just another snowdrift.

The snow is still coming down, and is expected to keep coming down through most of the night.

I emailed my boss and told him that I will probably be able to get out of my driveway by Memorial Day...

getting up at 5 AM to try to dig the car out in the almost dark and having to repeat the process several times as the plows kept coming back and shoving more snow at the car.

Heavy snowfall is not trivial. It sucks.

I haven't seen this much snow since I was a kid. And back then I lived in the city, so even though it was a hassle for the grown-ups, it wasn't the sort of stark survival situation that it is up here in the boonies.

Now I'm old and I live alone. This winter has honestly worn me out - and I'm someone who loves winter.

I wasn't quite ready to give up on winter completely so I moved to the high desert. Most years, the snow is polite and dumps most of itself on the peaks. Seven years ago it was distinctly impolite and dumped 18 inches here in the city. Since this town has no snowplows and the Feds only plow the high passes the interstates go through and maybe a few main roads elsewhere, I was housebound for a couple of weeks. Good thing I like beans and rice washed down with tea, I had ample supplies of all of those.

I am assured by my neighbors that it happens only forty years or so. I also understand that the city has bought a few plows since then.

Here is hoping you get a day off from work and the snow melts by the weekend.

And this being mid-April, the snow WILL melt off in fairly short order.

It's just that it's been such a long, long, cold and snowy winter this year - my coping mechanisms have worn rather thin.

They showed Woodbury at 9pm and it was merely wet. Snow expected until after midnight so you may be right about getting to work.

and any sensible person would think (even in northern Minnesota) that this far into spring there shouldn't be any more snow? Or do they do a crappy job of snow removal in the first place.

No matter what, sympathies to you.

Last night we drove to the store and nearly went into the ditch getting on an exit ramp (we live in northern Hennepin County - and they were actually good about plowing here) - my husband showed off some bad ass driving skills. I would have just hit the nearest snow bank and cried. Way back during the Halloween storm of '90 I was in a car accident on a ramp driving to Duluth from Superior - I was a passenger - ever since then I get a little panicky on icy roads and ramps.

This heavy wet snow is a pain too.

I saw some a pair of robins looking so sad trying to save their nest during this snowstorm.

Hang in there - we are supposed to warm up soon.
