ever been to MayDay books on the Westbank in Minneapolis?

It is a great bookstore for progressives and people who like history.

They have books you don't see at Barnes and Nobles.

I was looking at their list of newer books.. You can also hang out and read and visit with other like minded people.
Great little restaurants nearby.

Magazines & Newspapers

Mayday carries magazines like: The Nation, The Progressive, Monthly Review, Show Me The Money, New Internationalist, Earth Island Journal, Science in Society, UTNE Reader, Z Magazine, Dollars & Sense, Bitch, Against the Current, Labor Notes and left-wing newspapers like: Fight Back, Workers Vanguard, 5th Estate, Slingshot, Socialist Appeal, Justice, Progressive Populist, Catholic Worker (1 cent), Socialist Action, The Match and others.

Sample of Used / Marked-down Books in Stock:

”The World Has Changed—Conversations with Alice Walker,” Edited and introduced by Rudolph P Byrd. Walker and conversations with other authors like Isabel Allende, Howard Zinn and Amy Goodman. $12.00 Hdbk.

NEW BOOKS in STOCK

“Life During Wartime—Resisting Counter-Insurgency,” Edited by Kristin Williams, Will Munger & Lara Messersmith-Glavin. Collection of anarchist essays over how to combat repression in the U.S. and overseas.

“Hardhats, Hippies and Hawks—The Vietnam Antiwar Movement as Myth and Memory,” Penny Lewis. Lewis examines the imagery of working-class conservatism promoted by media, parties and the government during the 60s and 70s.

“How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin—the Untold Story of a Noisy Revolution,” by Leslie Woodhead, 2013. The thesis is this book is that rock music played a subversive role in the USSR and eastern Europe by showing up the stodgy cultural standards of the ruling bureaucracy, and alienating youth from the system. Reviewed on the Mayday Blog.

“The Marijuana Chronicles,” Series of essays on the evil weed, edited by Jonathan Santlofer. Even by an essay by the very straight Joyce Carol Oates.

“Radical Unionism—The Rise and Fall of Revolutionary Syndicalism,” by Ralph Darlington. History of various attempts to make syndicalism work in France, Spain, Italy, America, Britain and Ireland in the early part of the 20th Century.

“Rise of the Warrior Cop—The Militarization of America’s Police Forces,” by Radley Balko, 2013. War methods come home. The author shows how the drug war under Republican and Democratic presidents, and the closer alliance between the Pentagon and various police forces is leading to another standing army – occupying our neighborhood streets

I almost forgot there were bookstores, places where one can actually look at what we're buying before buying it.

Open Noon to 7 pm, M-F; Noon-6p Saturday, closed Sunday. 301 Cedar Ave, in the same building where Midwest Mountaineering and The Hub Bike Coop are. On the north-facing side of the building. From website: "Sometimes we must close down on certain rare occasions, so it is always a good idea to call ahead before making a special trip."

http://www.MayDayBookStore.org

from website: "NOT MAKING A PROFIT SINCE 1975 ALL BOOKS ARE 15%-20% OFF ALL THE TIME"

I'm glad to see they are still surviving after 38 years, when so many other bookstores have disappeared. (A lot of volunteer time given, they do accept donations).

They also host some progressive events, but one rarely hears about those anymore now that we don't have a progressive events calendar or other progressive events notification system. But oh well. Well there's this ( http://justcomm.org/mn-prog-events/ ) , but it needs people to send notices of progressive events to: mn-prog-events {at} justcomm.org . (More: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10592154 ). If there is anything better out there, I'll stop yammering about it and yammer about the something-better-out-there thing.

Just to see what we're missing, its good to look at Dave Shove's Progressive Calendar in its feisty heyday, like say all the way back to April 2011 when it was about 3-4 times weekly on average:

Something like this being typical of the good ol' days:

(No I don't at all endorse his anti-Democratic Party, his hate Obama views, its just something one has to put up with, taking the bad with the good. Well, occasionally I'd write him a note, but I was probably on his email blacklist so was a waste of my time).

I don't think the local progressive groups give it enough support.

I think all the University professors of social justice, political science and history need to advise their students of MayDay books.

It would be a sad day to lose it. It is a great place to stop by and talk with others.. talk history, politics. etc. or green stuff.. gardening.. solar. etc.

I have a hard time walking out their empty handed.. I often buy the latest Mother Jones and or Progressive magazine.. or the Nation.

and I can easily find a book to buy to give as a gift.

but they do have good books on living off the earth.. canning, growing vegetables from containers.. dumpster diving, other cheap living.
and if you just need a place to go and chat with others in a peaceful place and have a cup of coffee.. this is the place go to.

I wish you luck in getting a new job and or help.
