Whitmer's win may offer blueprint for Democrats to flip Michigan in 2020
Still energetic after a long day of traveling across Michigan to sell her proposed gas tax hike, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer embraced an eager crowd gathered in a hip metro Detroit lifestyle store.
She was joining 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., for a March 18 meet and greet with Oakland County voters. Leading off with a pithy riff about her fix the damn roads slogan, a relaxed Whitmer mingled with suburban moms and fired-up democrats about the prospect of defeating President Donald Trump next year.
Because you show up, we win elections, Whitmer said to cheers. Because you showed up last year, we won big last year. We took all the top offices in Michigan. We sent five women to Congress, we took seats in the House and the Senate.
As Governor of this great state, I know that all roads to the White House lead through the state of Michigan, right?
