Audit showing mismanagement preceded state employee union takeover
LANSING — AFSCME took over the day-to-day operations of Michigan’s oldest state employee union this week after a recent audit “raised serious concern about the financial management of the local,” according to an email sent to members late Wednesday.
Don Zavodny, appointed by AFSCME as administrator of the Michigan State Employees Association, said Monday’s move was necessary “to ensure members’ resources are protected and used efficiently.”
The email, obtained by the Free Press, gave no details about what financial issues were raised by the recent audit, or who performed the audit. Zavodny would not elaborate when contacted by phone Thursday morning.
The Free Press, which first reported AFSCME's action on Monday night, has reported on years of strife at the MSEA, which was formed in 1950, including concerns from members and board members about a lack of financial transparency and a "cloak and dagger" culture.
