Ex-union bookkeeper 'embarrassed, ashamed' in $307K theft, sent to prison
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A former bookkeeper who used labor-union funds to buy $900 Katy Perry concert tickets and purchases at QVC, Victoria's Secret and other retailers, was sentenced to four years in prison.
Stephanie Marie DeBoer, 41, the former bookkeeper and office manager for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 876 in Edmore, was sentenced Tuesday, Feb. 20, by U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney in Kalamazoo.
He ordered her to pay $307,562.54 in restitution.
The government said the loss included $89,000 taken from a safety-clothing fund that she used to make payments on 16 credit cards.
She took another $156,000 from the union's general account by writing checks to herself and her landlord, Assistant U.S. Attorney Clay Stiffler wrote in a sentencing memorandum.
