Michigan State faculty grapple with next steps following no confidence vote

Michigan State University's Faculty Senate grappled Tuesday with how to move forward after overwhelmingly approving a vote of no confidence in the Board of Trustees last week amid the fallout over the Larry Nassar sex-abuse scandal.

No final decisions were made, but faculty debated several questions.

Among them: Should they approve a motion calling for the board to resign?

And if so, should the faculty stipulate that they're doing so because of the Nassar scandal, or because the board didn't listen to faculty concerns when they hired former Gov. John Engler as interim president?

Whatever decision is made, it's important that faculty stand behind their actions and not "acquiesce" if the board doesn't listen, said Rand Spiro, a professor in the College of Education.
