Tentative agreement reached in Pontiac retiree health care litigation
The city of Pontiac and the City of Pontiac Retired Employees Association have reached a tentative agreement to settle the retiree health care litigation and mediation which has been ongoing since 2012.
Former Emergency Manager Lou Schimmel ordered the elimination of all retiree health care and related benefits in 2013, instead offering general employee retirees a monthly stipend of $400 to purchase health care on the open market. The retiree association sought legal action to halt the elimination and the case has been in and out of court and mediation since.
In total, about 1,500 individuals were affected including 800-900 retirees.
The settlement would restore health, dental and optical benefits for all eligible city retirees as well as continue the guarantee of 100 percent of pension benefits for retirees, according to a release from the city.
