Why 1,000 Calvin College alumni, students oppose Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - More than 1,000 Calvin College alumni and students have signed a letter sharing their reasons why their fellow alumna Betsy DeVos, President Donald Trump's nominee for U.S. Secretary of Education, isn't qualified for the job.
Sara Moslener, Class of 1996, announced on Facebook Saturday, Jan. 21, that she had drafted the letter opposing DeVos' appointment. The growing signatures on the letter, available for anyone to send to their senator, span from the Class of 1953 to 2020.
The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions is scheduled to vote on DeVos' nomination next week. Originally scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 24, it was postponed until 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31. Her confirmation hearing was Jan. 17.
"I understand the ideology that Betsy DeVos holds because I grew up in it but as I got older, I became deeply uncomfortable and realized it was not a recipe for religious and spiritual integrity but a route to political power,'' said Moslener, professor of religion at Central Michigan University.
