Gov. Rick Snyder is asking the Michigan Supreme Court for an advisory opinion on whether $2.5 million in state dollars to reimburse nonpublic schools for complying with state mandates is constitutional.
"The Michigan Supreme Court's prompt resolution of important constitutional questions through advisory opinions greatly assists the people of Michigan...by providing the necessary constitutional certainty before moving forward with the implementation of the law," Snyder wrote in a letter to Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Young.
The $2.5 million was included in the state's education budget, which Snyder signed into law last month.
The dollars were opposed by groups such as the Michigan Association of School Boards and the Michigan Association of School Administrators, who argue the state constitution clearly prohibits public funding for private schools.
