Boston hail from severe storms likely largest in 65 years
UPDATED 12:20 PM EDT Aug 05, 2015

BOSTON —The hail that fell in Boston during Tuesday's severe storms appears to have been an event unprecedented in at least the last 65 years, according to data from the National Climatic Data Center.

The 2-inch hail reported and photographed by residents throughout the city was larger than any hail storm recorded in Boston in the data kept since 1950.

Since 1950, only six storms in Boston have produced hail larger than one inch. On May 6, 1966, 1 inch diameter hail fell and on July 18, 2012, hail was measured at 1.25 inches.

The largest hail reported in the state since 1950 fell In Essex County in 1965. Hail from that storm measured 3.5 inches.
