SWANSEA — The West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes collected from Swansea and Seekonk, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced Tuesday.
In 2013, 6,092 mosquito samples were tested for the virus; 335 samples were positive. Swansea had zero mosquito samples test positive for the virus. Figures for 2014 were not available.
West Nile virus is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito, according to a press release from Swansea's Board of Health office. The mosquitoes that carry this virus are common throughout the state, and are found in urban as well as more rural areas.
While West Nile virus can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe infection.
