SOMERSET — With Brayton Point Power Station and the former Montaup power plant, there are notable differences and similarities.

For Brayton Point and its 234 acres and 1,500-plus megawatts, annual taxes “shrunk” to $4.6 million from $12.5 million in fiscal 2013. There are more than 200 employees, and its owners still plan to close Brayton Point on May 31, 2017.

The old Montaup on Riverside had contained 26.2 acres (less 11 acres sold this year to National Grid) and last generated 174 megawatts when closed in 2010, when it paid $800,000 in taxes and 40 people worked there. For fiscal 2015, the new owners paid $131,500 in taxes.

During the past seven months, as state legislation through a $100,000 grant funneled from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center paid for a feasibility study on re-use of Brayton Point and Montaup, their common denominator remains the same: Both are privately held and the possibilities are just that.
