from John Delaney:

The unnecessary government shutdown is over and it is time for us to get back to work. Hopefully the bipartisan vote that finally took place to end it is a positive sign. The American people certainly made it very clear that they demand better from Congress, and I certainly agree with them.

We need to help the economy grow, make our nation more competitive for the 21st century and strengthen our nation’s commitment to fairness and justice. I know that you sent me to Washington to find commonsense solutions and I take that responsibility very seriously.

Here’s what should be on our Congressional do list:

Investing in infrastructure. My first piece of legislation, The Partnership to Build America Act, is up to 22 Democratic co-sponsors and 24 Republican cosponsors. This bill will create thousands of jobs and help rebuild our crumbling roads and bridges with no new appropriated funds.

Finding a real compromise on the budget that is based on facts, not ideology. We need to reform corporate taxes and entitlements and make sure that we continue to invest in our future. A grand bargain that includes revenues and spending will restore our fiscal health and allow us to avoid these destructive standoffs.

Passing comprehensive immigration reform. The Senate passed an overwhelmingly bipartisan bill and the House needs to do the same. Immigration reform is a moral and economic imperative. 42 percent of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or the children of immigrants and we need to allow the best and the brightest to thrive here.

Helping working families by raising the minimum wage. If you work full time, you shouldn’t live in poverty. Period. I’m a cosponsor of legislation to raise the minimum wage federally and am working to also address the issue in Maryland.

Continuing the fight for equal rights by passing the Employee Non-Discrimination Act, which makes workplace discrimination based upon sexual orientation illegal. I’m a cosponsor of the House version of this bill, which is likely to be considered by the Senate this fall.
Everyone knows that we face considerable challenges, but that doesn’t mean that solutions aren’t out there. It’s time to work together and get things done,

Thanks for your support,

John
